B4SH is an independent, not-for-profit, Community Benefit Society (CBS) largely staffed and run by volunteers. We will install a brand new, full fibre to the home (FTTH) network, independent of any existing networks. Our route will rely on free wayleaves (permission to dig) across landowners’ land; investment from the community and will target the rural areas which currently have poor and unreliable service. We will connect into the dark fibre network north of Albury, Surrey and then run south into the Surrey Hills. Our connection will link our fibres direct into the Telehouse North Peering Centre (ie Internet Exchange) in Docklands.
There can be no shareholder dividends and any surplus must be re-invested in community projects. Anyone purchasing shares becomes a member of B4SH and is entitled to vote at general meetings; one vote, irrespective of the number of shares owned. HMRC have also given pre-approval for Social Investment Tax Relief (SITR), meaning private investors can claim a tax rebate of 30%.
We have modelled ourselves on the highly successful Broadband for the Rural North (B4RN). If you want to know why they are so successful, see this youtube video from a little while ago; note B4RN now have over 50 parishes and around 4,000 services connected: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=youtube+b4rn&view=detail&mid=B566E8C121FACD185AF8B566E8C121FACD185AF8&FORM=VIRE
We have already received a huge amount of interest and pledges of support and investment from individuals throughout the Surrey Hills. B4SH plans to build out its network, as investment and support from volunteers permits; each expansion being funded by the community via the purchase of new shares.
We are a company owned by the people, for the people. A truly ethical company that supports the local community.
